Wow-what is that?

In 1974, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico was used to send a message into space as a part of the Interstellar Message Project. If there were intelligent life outside our planet, they could see this message and be informed of our existence.

The announcement was broadcast at about 2,380 MHz for about three minutes — and then repeated for over an hour!

Unfortunately, that radio signal would take 25,000 years to reach the closest star system outside our own. Even though light can travel at 186,000 miles per second in a vacuum, it still takes eight minutes to get to Earth from the Sun (which is only 92 million miles away). So as far as we know right now, there are no alien civilizations within 25 trillion miles capable of receiving this signal. But who knows? Maybe some aliens have been watching us through their telescopes and haven’t made their presence known yet.

The “Arecibo message” toward a cluster of stars known as M13. The broadcast was part of a larger initiative called the Interstellar Message Project, which aimed to send messages into deep space to let extraterrestrials see that we’re here and have nudes (we assume).

The Arecibo message consisted of three sections:

  • A pictorial representation of human DNA and its basic structure
  • A picture showing a man…
