Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum So Haunted
Built between 1858 and 1881, the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is North America’s most enormous hand-cut stone masonry structure and reportedly the second largest globally, behind the Kremlin. It is located in the middle of Weston, West Virginia.
Renowned architect Richard Andrews created the design using the Kirkbride plan, which called for long, rambling wings organized in a staggered pattern to ensure that each linking structure received a lot of refreshing sunlight and fresh air.
The first hospital, built with space for 250 people, began accepting patients in 1864 and reached its height in the 1950s, housing 2,400 people in cramped, subpar circumstances. The facility was forced to close in 1994 due to changes in the way mental illness was treated and physical degradation, which had a disastrous impact on the local economy that hasn’t fully recovered.
As you may know, it is one of the most haunted locations.
