The Haunting of the Ashmore Estate
The historic Ashmore Estates is located outside of Ashmore, Illinois, in the United States. It was erected in 1916 as the Coles County Poor Farm’s second almshouse on the premises. The complex was in use until 1959.
It was used as a private care center for people with mental and other problems. Ashmore Estates, Inc. bought the structure and the surrounding grounds that year. However, in 1986, Ashmore Estates was forced to close due to financial issues brought on by a changing healthcare landscape.
Up until 2006, the building was vacant and deserted. It was converted and used as a for-profit haunted attraction once it was under new ownership. 2013 storm damage led to another ownership shift. The owners have made basic structural preservation repairs since 2014 to showcase the building as a historic landmark and location for paranormal research.
The building is massive and creepy back in the glory days. The Ashmore Estate had 30 buildings spread out on 260 acres of land.
On February 15, 1880, 5-year-old Elva Skinner woke up and got out of bed. Her clothes ignited as she dressed up by the fire, and Elva Skinner burned to death. Now she haunts places and roams the area of the dearly parted building.
