Old Milton Elementary School
Built in 1904, Old Milton Elementary School in Alton, Illinois, served as a school until it was closed in 1984. A maker of ornamental glass bought it in 1990, and which is still used for that purpose today.
Many people think the ghost stories surrounding this structure are just a fabrication. A schoolgirl named Mary was allegedly raped and murdered by a janitor in the school’s gym locker sometime in the 1930s. The janitor hanged himself from an exposed beam in the school hallway a few weeks later.
Teachers, students, and outside guests started to experience unexplained sights and sound soon after the murder and suicide. In addition, women frequently experienced anxiety and unease when they visited the location of Mary’s murder.
Other witnesses reported:
- Sightings and audio of Mary’s ghost in an office
- Encounters with a hostile entity
- Unexplained sounds
- Strange shadows
A 2010 Ghost Hunters episode on the Syfy Channel included a paranormal investigation and a psychic exorcism of the evil ghost.
The staff members reported similar paranormal encounters when the glass company occupied the building.
Some of the reported phenomena included:
- Footsteps at night in halls when no one was there
- Objects and items that appear and disappear
- An apparition of a small girl
- Mary’s ghost appears in a woman’s office (located outside the former gymnasium)
- Objects in the room moved to other areas.
- Apparition playing or sitting on stairs outside the office.
- Computer keyboard X’s and O’s tapped out on the screen
One female worker reported feeling the janitor’s ghost was following her, eventually leading her to leave the organization.
