Haunted Old Portland Highschool
Portland’s former high school in Ionia County, Michigan, was founded in 1881. According to an old urban myth, a 14-year-old girl was crushed to death by gym bleachers in 1918. The janitor vanished after seeing the broken bleachers and failing to restore them. In retaliation for the death of his daughter, the student’s father murdered the janitor. Immediately following the student’s death, a fire broke out in the school. In 1920, the school was renovated and reopened. The girl’s spirit and the janitor’s ghost, however, persisted.
Years later, the school was transformed into Old School Manor, a housing development. From 1992 to 2008, some residents complained that their belongings disappeared, only to be found piled high in another room. In this ghost story, a student strikes a child on the back after ringing the bells improperly.
One renter, in particular, had a terrifying encounter with the ghost of the janitor. She ordered that she inform her mother they had to leave their apartment because she said the spirit would torment her two-year-old daughter.
