Dogs in Space
In the space race before Apollo 11, there were hundreds of missions. Testing was crucial. Both sides, the United States and Russia, wanted to land on the moon. To make sure their mission works, they had to sacrifice to make this mission accomplished. They had to use a living creature who could be trainable. They used dogs.
During the 15 years, more than thirty-six dogs were used and have died or forgotten since then. Here are some of the dogs that accomplish the mission.
Bars and Lusichka
In the summer of 1960, Bars and Lisichka launched a test mission. In particular, Lisichka was a favorite of Sergei Korolev, who was the Soviet Union’s leading rocket engineer and spacecraft designer. Nevertheless, if the spacecraft missions failed in the first attempt, all the training, preparation, and design would be for nothing. Just 28 seconds after launching, the capsule exploded, killing both dogs. It appears that more work is needed.
