Locals in the area refer to it as the “gateway to hell” because they believe that at a depth of 40,230 feet, it would be possible to hear the cries of the dead. The Soviet Union initiated the project at the time to dig down into the Earth’s crust. Drilling as far as possible was the objective.

From 1970 to 1994, the Soviets conducted drilling operations on the Kola Peninsula near the Norwegian border. At a depth of 40,230 feet, it was the deepest artificial point on Earth by 1989. By 1979, they had dug the deepest hole on Earth. This mark is still valid today.

Using a drilling rig, the Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled. Several holes have been drilled. Several holes radiate out from the main one. The giant hole has a diameter of just 9 inches and 7.5 miles.

Measurements of the rocks and the composition of the Earth’s crust were made as part of the project’s intention to advance science. According to experts, even rocks older than 2 billion years had organic life. However, microscopic fossils were the only traces of life.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole was barely dug a third of the way through the Earth’s crust when the project was abandoned, despite…
