The mining pond behind Russell Park on Sunday, Nov. 10, 1974.

A chilly autumn evening made the stars shine bright in the dark sky. Three teenage boys, friends and curious souls, were out on Salem Mountain when they saw a red, whirring ball descending from the heavens, heading straight for the silt pond near Russell Park.

As it plunged into the water, the pond erupted in a glow, like a fire had been lit within its depths. The boys were stunned, unsure of what they were witnessing. And as the news spread, the townsfolk gathered ‘round, their faces aglow with a mix of wonder and fear.

The police and military were called, and soon, the pond was surrounded by a sea of curious onlookers. But as the hours ticked by, the glow grew more robust, casting an otherworldly light over the night. It was as if something was alive, pulsing with an energy that defied explanation.

A scuba diver was called in, and with the help of locals, they began to search the pond for the source of the glow. But they found an old railroad lantern, its battery still sparking, but nothing more. The authorities declared it a hoax, a prank gone wrong.
